"CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS WITH THE BIGUENO"

In the Philippines, Christmas Eve is a big deal as well as for the Biguenos. Many individuals remain up all night on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Christians went to church on Christmas Eve evening to hear the final'simbang gabi,' or Christmas Eve mass. After that, there is a midnight feast known as Noche Buena.

The Noche Buena is a large, open-house Christmas event with family, friends, and neighbors dropping by to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! Most houses would have a variety of delicacies on the table, including lechon (roasted pig), ham, fruit salad, rice cakes (bibingka and puto bumbong are traditional Christmas snacks), and other desserts, steaming rice, and a variety of beverages.

The Christmas season usually begins as soon as the "Ber" months approach. This is evident when the popular Jose Mari Chan song begins to play on radios and in malls as soon as September 1st arrives.

Christmas lanterns (parols), Christmas trees, parols, belens, and dazzling lights adorn homes and structures around the country. This is also an indication that Filipinos have begun to anticipate the best season of the year.

Bigueno Christmas, I feel, can be enjoyed whether you are in the Philippines or not. Whether you were born, grew up, or spent time in the Philippines, it is a part of who you are.
